The face is familiar ….

We love our mojigangas.

The tall, human-fueled street puppets have been around San Miguel de Allende since 1924. They are of as many varieties as there is of life.

They can be comic, satirical, political, nuptial, magical, tragic, whimsical, mystical, surreal, fantastical, scary, devilish, angelic, familiar, historical, sexy, skeletal, ethnic, gypsies, tramps and thieves, and even, ordinary.

Like those images above from a recent parade in San Miguel.

One thing is for certain, when the puppets are strapped to the shoulders of young men and women (and their elders in good shape) … they come alive. There is nothing more fun than watching a wedding party dancing, singing and cavorting behind a bride and groom mojigangas in Parque Juarez.

Mojigangas are there to help you smile. Always.

There is a handful of extraordinary mojigangas lounging about on the first level of the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez El Nigromonte (Belles Artes) on Calle Hernandez Macias #75.

They are a bit of a tribute to the city’s master puppet makers from over the decades.

Here are some I photographed the other day (above), both in full figure and as headshots. Since they are usually swirling madly up and down the streets, I couldn’t resist photographing them at rest.

Such an unusual state for a mojiganga.

Stop by to see the detailed work that goes into these masterful puppets.

  1. Bob, If I send your marvelous newsletter to my friends who are here in San Miguel for Dia de Muertos, can they read them? Or do they need to sign up to read it? Is there such a thing as a guest share?

Have a meaningful holiday week! Patrice
