‘Half way to Paradise, so near yet so far away…’

Thank you, Billy Fury for that 1961 golden oldie. (Recorded the day before I turned 11.)

Well, this golden oldie crossed the halfway mark on the Camino Frances this morning at 10:30 am, three hours after leaving Carrion De Los Condes.

There seems to be some dispute over the actual halfway point. This sign in Ledigos also claims the honors.

Only 400 kilometers to go. And 20 days to do it in.

I mean, it was a little exhilarating. I wasn’t expecting fireworks or a band or anything. But a bell to ring maybe?

Just another passing pilgrim who asked me to take his picture and offered to take mine. We exchanged camera phones, clicked a few, the pressed on.

(I was tired but not nearly as knackered as I look in this picture!)

It was a 17-mile day, so not a lot of energy to expend on socializing. I walked entirely by myself today, by choice. Just one of those days when I’ve run out of words, and the ability to absorb them from others.

Leaving Carrion this morning, after a quick stop for a 5 euro breakfast:

That said, I chatted with about a dozen friends during coffee and snack breaks. Maybe others were feeling the same way today.

The one person I would have enjoyed meeting was Eduardo from Chile, a retired Navy officer who sailed on the Tall Ship Esmeralda and who served on a South American military delegation to China. We had some great talks while walking the other day.

I wanted to tell him how much I enjoy reading his countrymen, author Roberto Bolaño and poet Pablo Neruda. And to acknowledge that I’ve never read Isabel Allende, though I will some day.

Hey, clearly, I’m wandering here. Today was muggy and warm with dark clouds chasing us the whole way to Terridillos de los Templarios.

A couple of climbs to break up the endless flatness and vastness of the harvested fields. But you know? The Meseta is its own kind of beauty.

Some views from the Meseta, between Carrion and Terradillos:

I love it.

That’s about it. I’m tired.

I’ll just post some pics from today’s 17.8 miles walking.

Then I’ll leave you with pictures of a couple of kittens I saw today. Everybody loves cats. I’ll bet they are what people remember most from today’s post.

The kittens:

I told ya, cute!

Good night from beautiful Spain.
