San Miguel de Allende, The Week in SMA

SMA Events July 14 — 20: Futboll! Baseball! Opera! Theater! Photos ops! A tea party! A coffee mixer! Cows! Get out there!

OK, there’s nothing going on with cows this week. At least, I don’t think so. But, in case nothing else on this blog appeals to you, you can download this photo and stare at the cows out in the Compo. I took this photo Saturday morning while hiking near the railroad tracks, just below Los Frailes.

The “100 Women Who Care” group will be holding its quarterly “battle of the NGOs” crowd-funding event at La Casona Hotel, Calle Josefina Orozco #2. Despite the name, men are invited, too!
Here’s how it works: We meet four times a year for one hour each time. Each woman (or team of two women) donates $1,000 pesos (about $50 usd) or $2,000 pesos (about $100 usd) each meeting.

The names of about 20 NGOs (non-government organizations) that have been nominated by members are placed in a hat. At each meeting, we draw three names. We hear a short presentation on each of the three organizations, and then we vote. The winning organization receives all of the pesos that were collected at that meeting.”
It is a great opportunity to learn about local non-profit groups and it works. 100 Women has raised $3,836,831 pesos (more than $200,000 usd) for NGOs doing extraordinary work in San Miguel. Learn more at 100whocarealliance.org.

11:45 a.m. — A lot can happen in 24 hours
Do you remember the “24 Hours” photography books? In a single day, hundreds of photographers would fan out across a city or whole country and take photographs of everyday life. Editors would compile the photos into thick, insightful, and gorgeous slices of life — made all the more special because we all didn’t have access to these places and didn’t have digital phone cameras like today.

Well, iPhone or camera in hand, you can be a part of something like that in San Miguel on Saturday. Youre invited to turn your lens on our world for “24 Hour Project / San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.” Registration is in the Jardine on Friday starting at 11:45 a.m.

The 24 Hour Project is a photo walk for a cause that takes place in various cities around the world and allows participants to document and share local life for 24 hours straight. The 24 Hour Project connects emerging and professional photographers united by a passion for photography. Anyone with a photography device (mobile phone or camera) is welcome.

This edition will support The Work She Does Foundation in India. All the information about the 24 Hour Project can be found here.

7 p.m. — Musical debut at the Peralta
A new show in the “zarzuela” tradition will have its world premiere at the Angela Peralta Theater, Mesones #82, with a cast of eight singers, with sets, props, and costumes. The show is titled “Viaje de Ida y Vuelta” (“Round Trip”). It pays tribute to the rich diversity and welcoming spirit of Mexico.

Centuries before the Broadway musical, a genre of musical theatre called zarzuela debuted in Spain in 1657. It combines song, music, and spoken word.

The story, based on true events, begins in 1936, when a Spanish artist, enacted by Didier Otaola, flees a country torn by civil war and crosses the ocean to Mexico, in search of a better life. He meets other like-minded artists and dreamers, and among them are singers of great talent – sopranos, tenors, and baritones – of various nationalities.

The show’s rich musical score is a fusion of Spanish, Anglo-Saxon, and Mexican popular music, performed in solos and choruses by an all-star troupe, whose members, lead by Madrid-based maestro Didier Otaola, include Alfredo Carrillo, tenor; Pao Diaz, soprano; Lean Flores, baritone; Don Krim, countertenor; Karina Pegueros, soprano; Octavio Rivas, tenor; and José Valdepeña, baritone. They will be accompanied by pianist and composer Jacobo Cerda. If any of the performers’ names are familiar, it is no surprise; The cast includes MetOpera competition finalists and singers who have performed leading roles on opera stages in Mexico and other countries. Krim is an audience favorite in San Miguel and will give his first performance here since the Covid hiatus.

Tickets are $100 pesos, $300 pesos, $500 pesos, and $800 at the Angela Peralta box office.
