SMA events June 30 to July 6: What a week! What a week!

Miss me? Sure you did. I’ve had fun these past few weeks but now I’m ready to have fun in San Miguel de Allende. Here is a sampling of some of the great events coming your way.

What off-season? Nobody takes a seasonal break in San Miguel anymore!

Sunday, June 30

11 a.m. – 6 p.m. A marketplace like no other

This is Day 2 of the La Romería Festi Verano, located at Lavanda Aldea Holistica, in Alcocer, San Miguel.  Around 40 vendors will offer vegan and vegetarian products, among others. All products – like soaps, jewelry, and shampoos – are free of animal testing. Entry is free and the range of products is extensive. Check out this page for details.

5-9 p.m. LGBTQ Social –Sunday Funday!

At La Joya Azul SMA, come hear DJ Moshrios, meet new friends, while dancing and laughing! Cash bar and food available on the Terrace. Come mingle with SMA’s gay community and friends and have a dance.  This is expected to become a monthly event as a way to connect the gay community in SMA.  For more information.

Tuesday, July 2 

11 a.m. — 7 p.m.Pop Up Shop til you bop

Every Tuesday at Cafe Rama is now the site of FARO • Pop Up Shop w/ Pre Loved & Vintage clothing. Come in to shop, for coffee or a snack, and hang out with the popper-uppers. “We´ll have a stacked rack full of goodies every week with various accessories, art, bits and bobs. It’s a shopportunity that you’re going to absolutely love!”

Thursday, July 4

5-9 p.m. Mama Mia! What a party! 

Patronato Pro Ninos puts on its annual July 4 fund-raising party. This year’s party trades glitz for country comfort as it moves to beautiful Mama Mia Centro, Calle Hernandez Macias #91, for a night of dinner, music, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Master of Ceremonies is auctioneer/actor Matthew DiLoreto. Music will be provided by The Andersons. 

Tickets: $120 usd / $2,000 mxn. Reserved table for 8 is $1,000 usd/$17,000 mxn.

7-9 p.m.  Noche Romántica: Homenaje A Grandes Compositores

Rondalla Santa Fe will perform the romantic compositions of José Alfredo Jiménez, Hernaldo Zúñiga, José Arturo Castro, Octavio Hernández, Martín Urieta, Álvaro Carrillo, Roberto Cantoral, Gonzalo Roy in a magical candlelight setting in Casa El Negromante,  Umarán #38.

Casa El Nigromante is part of the Cultural Extension of the University of Guanajuato. Its headquarters on Umeran is the historic and birthplace of Ignacio Ramírez “El Nicromante.” The extension presents a monthly cultural agenda of events. Many are free of charge.

Friday, July 5

5 and 7 p.m. – Jazz quartet at Cine Bacco

The Laké Quartet showcases music from its latest album and studio material in two shows as part of the Cine Bacco Concert Series. Infusing a modern twist into their sound, the quartet draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences including classical music, third stream, hip-hop, Spanish rhythms, and straight-ahead jazz — composed by guitarist Andrés Gándara. Rounding out the quartet are Patricio Mendez on piano, David Barrera, double bass, and Isaac Villagomez on drums.  Joining them for this event are Cuban trumpeter Kervin Barreto and jazz drummer/singer Bobby Kaplan from New York and San Miguel.

5:30 p.m. Tunki Talks resumes at Sierra Nevada

Eduardo Rincón, a Mexican artist based in San Miguel de Allende, is the second featured speaker of the Tunki Talks at Casa de Sierra Nevada hotel. The hotel has established Tunki Talks as a series of discussions with prominent thought leaders from the worlds of art and fashion.

Educated as a biologist, Rincón ultimately devoted himself fully to the study of nature through the arts. Eduardo collaborated on the renovation of Casa Sierra Nevada’s sister property, Maroma, creating beautiful shadow boxes with endemic plants carefully collected by hand, that are displayed throughout the suites.

6-8 p.m. Del Danzón al Vacilón

Keep the celebration going, at Conde Restaurante & Terraza, Insurgentes #63, with the all-Cuban music event – Del Danzón al Vacilón. Fresh from their concert triumph at the Angela Peralta Theater, leader Gabriel Hernandez brings together an explosive celebration of Cuban music with Alfred Thompson, Yaíma Gutiérrez Jiménez, Rafael Jose Ramirez Acosta, Roberto Vizcaino, Dairon Vàzquez, and special guest Camilo Medero. This show was postponed from June 28 because of weather.

Saturday, July 6

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Heart to Heart Charity Bazaar

Run by volunteers to support the work of Patronato Pro Niños, the bazaar offers high-end donated items, including jewelry, fashion, electronics, furniture, books, art, and more! Every purchase empowers community work and supports children in need. Enjoy a day of purposeful shopping in San Miguel de Allende! The bazaar is located at Calle Reforma #76C, Colonia Ignacio Ramirez.

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. 25h Anniversary Show and Sale

Joseph Bennett celebrates his 25th year  of creating “assembled art.” Explains Bennett: “It was on the evening of July 6, 1999, when I first sat down on the floor of my apartment in San Diego and began tentatively putting found objects in boxes. I had no idea that night would be the beginning of this magnificent, soul-enriching vocation… And yes, there will be cake.”

The Studio Space is located at Calle Subida del Caracol #11 (near the corner of 5 de Mayo and Prolongacion Aldama).

5-7 p.m.  Be the art!

Fabrica Aurora holds its monthly Art Walk when shops, galleries, and studios are open for some fun evening browsing. The people-watching is none too shabby either! It is a great chance to talk with artists, sip some wine, snack on appetizers, and get dressed in your coolest whites. Be artsy, be in the moment. Enjoy. Buy some art if you can.

6 p.m. The circus is coming to town

What a circus! The live performance titled “Avatar: Mundo Magico”  will be presented at the Angela Peralta Theater on July 6 and 7.  It is described as an “aerial circus and multidisciplinary dance show, by Circolibrí SMA.”   Tickets are $150 mxn to $350 mxn and available at the theater box office.  Phone: 415-144-8365.

6:30 — 8 p.m. Concert by vocal sextet Sjaella

A concert by the German all-female acapella sextet Sjaella will benefit Hospice Care Mitigare in the construction of the first hospice house in Mexico. The concert will take place at Palacio de Arte, el Rio y La Paloma #2, in Los Frailes. (Address has been corrected.) Donation Tickets are available now and can be purchased through Luna de Queso or directly from Hospice Care Mitigare board members. Tickets are $800 mxn for general admission or $1,500 mxn for Patrons, who will have special privileges and benefits, including an after-party, wine, appetizers, and more.
