What do you get when you put an artist with eclectic tastes into a room with a musician with eclectic tastes?
I don’t know, but why don’t you join me Saturday night and let’s find out together?
For the fifth time, Club Social San Miguel is uniting one amazing singer with one equally intriguing artist, and founder Sheree Boyer will kick off the conversation with the question, “What does your art mean to you?”

The artist and musician take it from there, and when the conversation reaches just the right point, one retires to make music while the other creates art in front of the audience. It is a formula that has worked extremely well over the four previous events.
This Saturday at Lolita’s restaurant on Salida a Celya, Boyer has invited two dynamic, internationally known women who refuse to be constrained by a single genre or medium.
Cuban-Mexican singer Leiden Gomis Fernandez will join French-born San Miguel multimedia artist Beá Aaronson to explore the roots and inspirations of their creativity. And then, to put that talk into action.
They are two artists who encompass multitudes into their hyphenated biographies. Leiden, as she is known professionally, is listed as a Cuban-Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, and sociologist. Beá Aaronson is a mixed-media artist whose pursuits include painting, sculpture, welding, collage, and photography. She works in watercolors, oils, acrylics, drawings, assemblages, collages, bronze, wood, clay, metals, and found objects. She is also an actress, starring in “Birdwatching” (2019), about a woman with Alzheimer’s who records her own decline on film.
She once told Lokkal, the online magazine, “It feels as if 50 different artists live inside of me! Not easy to channel!”
Leiden blends and bends Cuban-Latin energy into folk, rock, traditional, jazz, and urban into an emotionally compelling music that isn’t easily categorized, but – why not try? – a contemporary Latin American fusion? Leiden draws rhythms from her Cuban roots – she cites her grandfather, the poet and essayist Roberto Fernandez Retamar, as a major influence – and from the vibrant border sounds of Tijuana, where she grew up.
“As an artist, I consider myself a postmodern hybrid,” she once said in an interview. She even has “postmodern hybrid” tattooed on her forearm, like an inspirational beacon
A confirmed life-long indie artist, the singer-guitarist made her sensational debut in 2012 with her eponymously named album. That was followed by a live album, La Vuelta al Sol, drawn from a concert in Guadalajara. Los Muertos Tambien Dejan Flores was released in 2017. Singles like “Tu Boca,” “Cuando Soñaba,” and “Destino” have become indie staples.
During the Covid lockdown, Leiden co-founded Mexico’s first women-owned record label, Jueves. She has a degree in sociology, and this is a passion that also weaves into her art. She directs a songwriting project for women in prison, called Volver a corazon. Recently, Mexico’s prestigious Monster Music Awards recognized Leiden as Best Indie Woman Artist.
While Leiden is a sociologist, Aaronson holds a PhD in Philosophy and Comparative Literature.
This night has all the fixings for one spectacular conversation, one thrilling concert, and one dazzling display of artistry.
The event is Saturday, Feb. 7, starting at 6 pm. Tickets are $500 in advance and $600 at the door. Lolita’s is located at Salida a Celya #52. The restaurant offers an extensive dinner menu.
